Resume Writing Guide
SAGE Staffing would like to offer our candidates some resume writing advice based on years of experience. Of the countless resumes we read everyday, we have seen what has worked and what has not.

Do:

  • Lead with your strongest statements that are related to the job or goal
  • Emphasize your skills
  • Keep it brief (one page if at all possible)
  • List your dates of employment starting with your most recent job first
  • Be positive
  • Correct all typographical, grammatical, and spelling errors
  • Include your employment related accomplishments
  • Target your qualifications
  • Clearly communicate your purpose and value to employers
  • Use measurable outcomes, values and percentages when listing your qualifications

Do Not:

  • Use "I" to refer to yourself
  • Use abbreviations
  • Mention salary expectations or wage history
  • Use fancy typeset, binders, or exotic paper
  • Send a photograph of yourself
  • Make a statement that you cannot prove
  • Include personal information (age, height, family status)
  • Write "resume" at the top of the page
  • Include hobbies or social interests unless they contribute to your objective
  • Staple or fold your resume

What you should definitely be sure to include are action verbs — they give your resume power and direction. Try to begin all skills statements with an action verb. Below are some lists of action verbs that may apply to your particular field or skill:
